What Homebuyers Need to Know:
Recent changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) will affect most homebuyers in England and Northern Ireland. Here's what you need to know:
š The standard SDLT threshold has been reduced from Ā£250,000 to Ā£125,000, meaning buyers will start paying tax on property values above Ā£125,000.
š First-time buyers still benefit from relief, but the threshold has dropped from Ā£425,000 to Ā£300,000 (for properties worth up to Ā£500,000).
š° The new rates are: ā¢ 0% on properties up to Ā£125,000 ā¢ 2% on the portion from Ā£125,001 to Ā£250,000 ā¢ 5% on the portion from Ā£250,001 to Ā£925,000 ā¢ 10% on the portion from Ā£925,001 to Ā£1.5 million ā¢ 12% on any portion above Ā£1.5 million
š Approximately 80% of homebuyers will now pay more Stamp Duty than before these changes.
š For example, a non-first-time buyer purchasing a Ā£350,000 property will now pay Ā£7,500 in SDLT, up from Ā£5,000 previously.
